A deep learning algorithm developed by researchers at Oxford Brookes University is currently being used on more than 30 million Huawei mobile phones from the Mate 10 series onwards. The saliency detection algorithm identifies the areas within a portrait image which are the subject of a selfie, enabling the camera to adjust contrast settings to optimise the sharpness of the image. This algorithm was selected from among 18 competitors, outperforming others in terms of efficiency and accuracy by 25%.
