AI predictive data modelling in diabetes management

Researchers: Dr Arantza Aldea, Dr Clare Martin, Dr Tjeerd Olde Scheper

This research seeks to improve the health of diabetic and pre-diabetic patients and has resulted in increased collaboration and data analysis in the NHS, business and internationally. Within the key research project PEPPER (Horizon 2020 project 2016-2019) computer scientists, clinicians and industry leaders in diabetes support systems collaborated to develop a personalised decision support system for diabetes management. This work has been focussed on the development of a system that combines AI with predictive computer models to identify future diabetes patients. The system is being clinically validated in a three phase clinical trial involving 85 patients in two countries over six months. The research is now being continued in a subsequent project involving a pilot study in Colombia: COORDINATES – Cloud-based Tool for Diabetes Management and Research in Colombia, Initial Investigation.
